- Born on a farm in Delaware, Ohio, in 1822, Rutherford B. Hayes went on to earn a law degree. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War where he was wounded five times and gained a reputation for bravery in combat. He was elected to Congress in 1865 and become Ohio's Governor in 1868 where he gained attention for his uncompromising advocacy of a sound currency backed by gold.
He was elected 19th President of the United States but only served a single term by his own choice.
