- Our thirteenth President, serving from 1850 until 1853, Millard Fillmore is probably the best example of achieving success through plain old hard workind a little luck. Born in a log cabin in New York in 1800, he struggled to obtain an education under frontier conditions, worked his way up from local politics to be elected Vice President in 1848, and became President upon the untimely death of
Zachary Taylor in 1850. He served an unremarkable 3 years. Fillmore is one of the few Presidents who never campaigned for the job.
