- James Buchanan was the 15th President of the United States, serving from 1856 to 1860.
Buchanan was the last pre-Civil War president. His time in office was filled with trying to
make peace between the increasingly contentious political divisions of the time. The Confederate
States of America were created after Abraham Lincoln was elected, but while Buchanan was still
President, in November, 1860.
