Abraham Lincoln was born of humble roots in present-day LaRue County, Kentucky,
on February 12, 1809. With firm commitment to the belief that all men are created equal, he led the effort to end the institution of slavery in the United States. President Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, served from 1861 till 1865 when he died from an assassin 19s bullet on just days after the end of the Civil War.

The last 43 words of Lincoln's immortal Gettysburg Address, "...we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain 14 that this Nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom 14 and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.", are inscribed on the reverse.
