2005 Westward Journey Nickel Series Coin and Medal Set
The four United States Mint products presented in this collector's set give insight to the remarkable tale of exploration led by Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark two hundred years ago.
The Jefferson Peace Medal included was commissioned by our Nation's third President in 1801. It is estimated that the Corps of Discovery passed out several hundred of them to the American Indian leaders encountered along their journey westward. To complement this medal, the U.S. Mint has added a 2005 Proof Golden Dollar depicting the brave young Shoshone woman, Sacagawea, who helped direct the expedition through the vast, uncharted territories of the American West. She is depicted on the coin's obverse carrying her infant son, Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau.
Completing this set are the twp 2005-S proof five-cent coins struck for the second year of the Westward Journey Nickel Series. The American Bison nickel, representative of the wildlife encountered on the Lewis & Clark Expedition. And the Ocean View nickel, capturing the moment the Corps of Discovery believed they had finally reached the Pacific Ocean. Inscribed on the coin is an entry from Captain William Clark's journal, `Ocean in view! O! The joy!`
